CHAPTER FIFTEEN

“Good night, Grand Rapids!” Hannah called out, offering the audience a wave as she headed off the stage. She was dripping with sweat, buzzing head to toe with the high from an incredible performance. She took one last look over her shoulder before slipping backstage, wanting to savor the feeling of thousands of people calling her name.

A girl could get used to that.

There was one particular girl Hannah would love to hear calling her name, but that wasn’t going to happen. It hadn’t stopped Hannah from searching all the faces in the front rows during her final song, not seeing the one she sought. She hadn’t expected to, but it stung all the same.

In the almost two weeks that had passed since she and Shelby had kissed, they’d been nothing but professional. No. In truth, they’d been walking on eggshells around each other.

Hannah couldn’t blame Shelby for being hesitant; after all, she had a son to think about, and a relationship with someone in the public eye could have more consequences than they anticipated. Even so, Hannah couldn’t help but be consumed by thoughts of the girl she couldn’t have.

“Great show, Hannah!” One of the dancers tossed her arms around Hannah’s shoulders. “I’m ready for a break, but I’m going to miss this rush.”

“I know what you mean,” Hannah agreed.

They were at the halfway point of the tour, and everyone would enjoy a well-earned week off to relax after pulling off twenty-three shows in thirty-four days. Hannah was looking forward to the break, too, but she couldn’t help feeling slightly disappointed that she wouldn’t get to spend it with Shelby. And Liam, of course.

But it was fine. She could use the space to clear her head and maybe even get some writing done, knock out a song or two. About longing.

One bonus of taking a break was finally having a night in a real bed. She’d catch a flight to Nashville in the morning, but for tonight, she got to enjoy the luxury of a hotel room with a hot shower and a view out the window that didn’t move at sixty miles per hour.

When she arrived at the hotel, Brooke met her in the lobby.

“A nightcap?” Brooke asked.

“Sure. I don’t have to be on my game tomorrow.” Hannah rolled her shoulders on the way to the bar, raising a finger to catch the bartender’s eye. “Whiskey, neat.”

“Make that two.” Brooke slid onto a barstool. “You ready for some downtime?”

“I guess so.” Hannah kept her eye on the lobby.

“Shelby and Liam are already in bed,” Brooke said, clearly having no trouble guessing who Hannah was trying to find. The assistant lifted her tumbler for a sip, refraining from adding any more commentary.

Hannah silently cursed herself for being so obvious. She was starting to get paranoid, thinking that everyone around her knew how she felt about Shelby.

She continued keeping a lookout in case Shelby wanted to say goodnight.

“You got it bad, don’t you?”

Hannah slowly turned her gaze to Brooke. “What?”

Brooke shrugged, dropping her eyes to the amber liquid in her glass.
